You go looking for someone to help you connect the software you already pay for, or to put AI to work on the busywork eating your week. You send an email. And back comes the same sentence every single time:

“Let’s hop on a call and I’ll put together a custom proposal.”

Sound familiar? That sentence almost always means one of two things. Either they truly do not know what the work costs, or they want to size you up first and price you accordingly. Neither one is a good look when you are already up to your eyeballs running a business.

Picture buying a tractor that way. You walk onto the lot, you ask what the green one costs, and the salesman says he’d rather come out and look at your barn first. You’d be back in your truck before he finished the sentence. So why do we all put up with it when the thing being sold is consulting?

We got tired of it. So we quit doing it.

What Price Peekaboo actually costs you

Let’s give the game a name. Price Peekaboo is when the number stays hidden until somebody has had a good long look at you. Here is what it costs the person on the other end of it — you:

• Your hours. You sit through discovery calls that go nowhere, answering the same twelve questions for the third vendor this month.
• Your planning. You cannot budget for a number nobody will say out loud. So the project sits on the shelf another quarter.
• Your trust. When the quote finally lands, you are not reading it. You are reading between the lines, wondering whether that figure came from the work or from your website looking prosperous.

For a local service business this is especially rotten. You are not shopping for an eighteen-month enterprise transformation. You want to know one thing: can the tools I am already paying for work together better, and what will it cost me to find out? That is a fair question. It deserves a plain answer.

It respects your time. You can decide whether this is even in your ballpark before you spend forty-five minutes on a call with me. If the number is wrong for you today, you just saved us both an afternoon.

It builds trust faster than anything I could say. A hidden price feels like a game. A published price is a promise you can hold me to.

Honestly? It gets us better clients. People who look at the number and nod tend to make good partners. People who need to be talked into it usually do not. I would rather know that on day one.

How much does an AI systems audit cost?

• Mid-market — $9,997 to $14,997. Also fixed. The range reflects real differences in scope: number of tools, integrations, locations, and people we need to talk to. Your exact number is confirmed in writing after a short scoping call, and then it does not move.
• Enterprise or complex — custom, starting at $19,997. Governance, portfolio-scale build-versus-buy, the whole picture. Scope and fee are both fixed before anybody starts work.

Not hourly. Not “it depends how long it takes us.” A number, agreed before we begin.

The honest part about that number

Here is the damaging admission, and I would rather you hear it from me: a Systems Study is not cheap, and it is not magic. It is a few thousand dollars for somebody to come count your software, map where your hours go, and hand you arithmetic. Nobody gets a dopamine hit from that.

What it is, is boring and reliable. It is the difference between guessing and knowing. Most owners we work with are already burning more than the cost of the Study every year on licenses nobody opens — the real math on that is here — they just have never had it laid out on one page.

What happens after the Study

The Study stands on its own. Plenty of owners take the blueprints and run them with their existing team, and that is a completely fine outcome. We are not holding your diagnosis hostage.
